<image:title>Blog - Daytime Sleep Needs by Age - Naps - how long should they be? How many naps should your baby take each day? Should you wake your baby if they are taking an extra long nap? Daytime sleep can be such a minefield to navigate, whether you’re a new parent or a seasoned pro.</image:title>
<image:caption>The frustrating answer to most of these questions is that every baby is different, and will need different length naps. A good rule of thumb is that any nap over 1 hour is restorative sleep and because sleep begets sleep, restorative day time sleep will set your baby up for a good night’s sleep too. Below is a guide to how many hours per day your baby should be getting by age group. Of course, it is a guide only and some babies will take more / less naps than other babies their age.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Overall Sleep Needs by Age - A Guide - Do you find yourself wondering how much sleep your little one needs over 24 hours? I got you. All children are different, some are long nappers, others make up for shorter naps with longer stretches of sleep overnight, and then there are those unicorn children who love their sleep day and night and will even lie in!</image:title>
<image:caption>The below table can give you a good idea of how much sleep your little one will need depending on their age range. Note that this is a guide only and some children will fall either side of these ranges, it’s a good guide to help you to ensure your little one is getting the rest that their brain and body needs for healthy development.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Experience with Sleep Training my Son - My first son was born towards the end of 2020. He was our shining light of joy in a year of uncertainty and isolation through lockdown after lockdown. Becoming a mother in the middle of a global pandemic was…an experience! It was full of positives and negatives too. On one hand, being a winter lockdown baby, this was a great transition into parenthood, my husband and I hunkered down into our new normal and didn’t have to worry about entertaining visitors or hosting with a newborn.</image:title>
<image:caption>However, lockdown also intensified a lot of the isolation that new motherhood can bring. And with the sleep deprivation that, for us, lasted long after the newborn phase, I had some difficult times.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Bedtime Battles? Tips for when you need to step away - Does your family struggle with anyone other than the primary caregiver putting the kiddos to bed? You’re not alone! My kids are always SO EXCITED to see their dad when we all come home at the end of the day, it really is so sweet. But they do not share this enthusiasm for dad at bedtime. I count myself very lucky to have a very involved partner in raising my children and my boys absolutely love their dad. But when it comes to bedtime their preference is for me every time. It’s so normal that the primary caregiver is preferred at bedtime. I’m also here to let you know that it is so normal to want to be able to step away at bedtime and take some time for yourself.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Keeping Sleep on Track through Halloween - When we were all focused on getting bedtime, naps and morning wakes back on track after daylight savings, Halloween was creeping up, getting ready to throw everything all out of whack again!</image:title>
<image:caption>With all of the fun and excitement of Halloween, comes some disruption to our little ones’ sleep. Trick or treating brings later bedtimes, a sugar rush, lots of over excitement and of course, some fears due to all of the scary costumes and decorations around the neighbourhood. My oldest is almost 4 years old and is so excited to go trick or treating on Halloween night. Many families I work with as a child sleep consultant like to have some flexibility in their routines, and so do I with my own family! The advice I always give is that children who are well rested are more likely to adapt well to changes in their schedule. With that in mind, as much as possible in the lead up to Halloween, don’t let bedtime stretch too late. Some of the other typical challenges Halloween can introduce and how to approach them are below:</image:caption>

This means that we will all be gifted an extra hour of sleep. What a dream! For some kiddos, and some parents too, this can cause a bit of havoc with our circadian rhythms - wake up times change which can throw your routine completely out of schedule.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Nap Transitions: From 3 naps to 2 naps - Nap transitions can be tricky and moving from 3 naps to 2 naps is the first big transition that you will help your baby move through. But the good news is that the third nap is often the easiest to drop.</image:title>
<image:caption>Usually babies will start to drop the nap around the 8 month mark. And as a child sleep consultant I recommend that you aim for a 2 nap schedule by 9 months. You will know that your baby is ready to drop the nap when you see that the first two naps are really coming together and are both over an hour in length. In this case your baby will likely be well rested enough to not need a catnap to get to a 6:30 pm bedtime.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Easing Your Baby onto a Routine - There are lots of exciting milestones in a baby’s first few months of life. One of the more exciting milestones that we see around this 6-8 week mark is a baby’s first social smile. Those first smiles make it all worth it! You know those first spontaneous smiles that aren’t caused by gas and aren’t happening while they’re asleep - they’re actually just so delighted to see you.</image:title>
<image:caption>Along with those first smiles, this is when we typically see sleep become a little bit more organised, day/night confusion begins to dissipate and we see some much-needed longer stretches of sleep at night time. As a child sleep consultant, this is a great time that I recommend beginning to establish a healthy foundation for sleep by paying attention to a baby’s sleepy cues and practicing a gentle routine.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Newborn Sleep Tips: The Swaddle - One of the questions I get asked most often by new parents as a child sleep consultant is whether they should swaddle their newborn for naps and nighttime sleep. <image:title>Blog - Sleepy Cues: How to know when your child needs to sleep - “Sleepy cues” are how your baby communicates with you that they are tired and want to go to sleep. Paying attention to early sleepy cues can make a huge difference in a successful nap! As a child sleep consultant, this is often an area that I work with parents on the most. I often say that the equation of sleep is catching early stage sleepy cues + paying attention to the timing of sleep = sleep success.</image:title>
<image:caption>Remember that newborn sleep is disorganised and short naps are to be expected when your baby is this age. These are some typical sleepy cues that your child may use to signal that they are tired and ready for a nap or bedtime. <image:title>Blog - Overtired Baby? Here are 5 methods to Soothe Her - Something that we often hear from well-meaning friends and family is to avoid the perils of ‘spoiling’ our babies. I cannot stress this enough - you cannot spoil a newborn. There is no such thing as bad habits at this stage as long as everyone is safe. Do not worry or feel guilty about holding your baby too much or being too reactive to their cries. I’ll say it again - you cannot spoil a newborn, you cannot hold them too much. It’s our job as their caregivers to meet their needs and to help them to adjust to life outside of the womb. So soak up all of those tiny baby snuggles.</image:title>
<image:caption>When a baby reaches around the 6-week mark, we often see an increase in early evening fussiness and crying. We often hear it referred to as the witching hour - or witching hours, plural, as is often the case with a newborn! As a child sleep consultant, I often hear from parents during this time as sleep can become even more elusive.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Sleep Training: What is it?</image:title>
<image:caption>If you are feeling nervous about sleep training your child, I completely understand your fear and trepidation! I was in the exact same position a few years ago when I was considering sleep training my firstborn. I must have read hundreds of blog posts and articles on how to get my baby to sleep as well as at least 4 books. Sleep was all I could think about but I just wasn’t getting any. And of course the next thing I knew, the feeds on my socials were flooded with advice from both camps. Each sharing their emotionally driven feelings on the subject rather than sharing evidence based research. Here’s the thing, not everybody needs to sleep train! However, healthy sleep is so important for every member of the family. And I know that I am certainly a better mum when I am getting good sleep. Hopefully these points help you to decide if it’s right for you and your family.</image:caption>
